How to Teach IELTS Reading

In this unit, we are going to:

• familiarise ourselves with the format of the Reading section of the IELTS test
• find out what your learners should know about the format itself, the types of tasks, and differences between Academic and General Training reading
• discuss some general tips for this section.

In this unit, we are going to:

• find out about some general strategies to make the reading process effective.
• learn about the stages of a reading task completion
• discuss some effective ways to organise your learners’ interaction in the lesson.

In this unit, we are going to have a look at:

• reading sub-skills — gist reading, reading for specific information and detailed reading — in more detail
• useful strategies and tips for such task types as matching and multiple choice.

In this unit, we will:

• continue discussing some strategies more — analysing the gaps in the tasks and predicting missing information
• have a look at the action plans for such tasks as completing the gaps and True, False, Not Given / Yes, No, Not Given.

In this unit, we are going to learn how to organise the teaching of the IELTS reading section. In particular, we will look at:

• the order of reading tasks
• organisation of classwork and homework
• timed practice activities
• the ways of checking the answers in the lesson.

In this unit, we’ll look at typical problems they might have and suggest possible solutions. Apart from that, we will cover some compensatory strategies to help learners cope with reading text challenges. 

In order to get a certificate of completion, please complete the final test which covers all the units.
