At the beginning of a new school year, teachers turn their attention to their very first class. With a new group of students to integrate and make comfortable, ice breakers are an activity that is essential to those first days. Icebreakers are a lot of fun and can also be used to give students a break from more structured class activities. They can be implemented at the beginning of class or anytime during the lesson to boost energy levels and recapture students’ attention. Good icebreakers encourage bonding, participation, and motivation, and allow students to relax both mentally and physically. In this session we are going to look at:
- What an ice breaker is
- How an ice breaker works
- Types of ice breakers in ESL teaching
- Specific examples of ice breakers for online English lessons
